Precautions for the Generator to Operate under Overload

1. In case of emergency, the generator and exciter are allowed to operate under overload within short time of emergency. As for the allowed current and time of the emergency under overload, when the emergency generator operates under overload, it is required to closely monitor the inlet and outlet air of the generator and the coil temperature of the stator and rotor, and the outlet  water temperature of the coil of the stator and rotor as well as the operating status of brush, they shall not exceed the maximum value. When the stator current of the generator exceeds allowable values, the electric operator on duty shall firstly check the power factor and voltage of generator, and pay attention to the accounting of multiples and duration of the current exceeding the rated value, and then reduce the rotor current and decrease the stator current to the maximum allowed, but shall not make the power factor and voltage be too low. If the rotor current can't make the stator current lower to the allowed value, the dispatcher shall be contacted to reduce the active load of the generator.

2. When the one-point of the generator rotor in operation is earthed, the excitation system shall be cleaned and checked. If it belongs to stable metal earthing, the generator shall be stopped immediately for treatment. If the reason cannot be detected, the generator shall be stopped for treatment. When the generator excitation system is in one-point earthing, two points earthing faults caused artificially shall be strictly prevented.

3. When the condensation water drop( dew) occurs at the stator coil of the generator or on the air cooler, the inlet air temperature of the generator shall be increased to eliminate the dewing phenomenon.

4. When the air cooler water leaks, one group of air cooler of water leakage shall be stopped and the ground water accumulated shall be eliminated, at this moment, the inlet air temperature difference at both ends of the generator shall not exceed 3 degrees.

5. When the generator slip ring or the commutator surface of the exciter have strong annular spark, the slip ring color changes, and the commutator surface is burned and turns black, the causes shall be immediately detected and cleared and the spark and the overheating shall be quickly eliminated. If it is invalid, the excitation current shall be immediately reduced and even the active load shall be reduced, so that the spark and overheating can be reduced to the allowed specified value. If it is still invalid, the generator shall be stopped for treatment.

6. When the generator sends the signal of disconnection of differential protection, the differential protection for this generator shall be immediately stopped, and the stator current shall be reduced as far as possible. The secondary loop of the differential current transformer of this generator shall be detected. If the causes cannot be detected, the generator shall be stopped for checking.

7. When the automatic cabinet has failure, it shall be timely repaired and put into operation. The generator is not allowed to run for a long time under the adjustment of the manual cabinet. When the manual cabinet is operating, while the active power of the generator is adjusted, at the same time the reactive power must be appropriately adjusted in order to prevent the generator from losing the static stability.

8. When the generator outlet directly has short-circuit, the stator coil shall be carefully examined. If it is discovered that the stator coil deforms, the binding wire is loose, water leaks and other abnormal phenomenon occurs, the generator shall be stopped for checking.

9. When the generator smokes, fires and is in failure, in addition to that the generator shall be treated according to the fire regulations, its cooling water system shall be operated continuously and water supplying must not be stopped until the fire is extinguished.

10.  If long time short circuit happens outside the generator-transformer units and the pointer of the stator points to the maximum, but the voltage sharply reduces, if the protection device refuses to act, the generator-transformer units shall be manually disconnected immediately.
