The exhaust steam from low pressure cylinder exchanges heat with condensate in the condenser, the exhaust steam of low pressure cylinder is vaporized into water, the volume decreases to 1000 times approximately , thus  vacuum forms. The mixture of the steam not completely condensed into water with air is pumped from the vacuum pump, in order to ensure that the condenser vacuum meets the requirement.
